Cargill dan WWF Sepakat Evaluasi Bersama Kelestarian Pemasok Kelapa Sawit July 10, 2010

Posted by admin in : General , add a comment

Sime names Bakke CEO June 19, 2010

Posted by admin in : General , add a comment

Datuk Mohd Bakke Salleh has been named the new chief of Sime Darby Bhd and analysts think he could be the man to fix the conglomerate based on his track record.

Bakke earned his spurs after he helped to restructure Lembaga Tabung Haji in 2001-2002 following fraudulent withdrawals and poor investment decisions. The 56-year-old Bakke is currently group president and chief executive of Felda Global Ventures Holdings Sdn Bhd, the overseas investment arm of Felda Group.

TA Securities analyst James Ratnam said Bakke’s appointment as Sime Darby’s president and group chief executive makes sense due to his experience in plantations and properties and these are the divisions that contribute most to the company’s bottomline. “He’s reputed to be straightforward and takes a hands-on approach in managing large entities,” Ratnam said.

Bakke’s appointment, which will happen “as soon as practicable” comes in the wake of Sime Darby losing about RM1 billion from several energy and utility projects.

Sime Darby’s board has yet to meet Bakke. “He’s travelling. We’ve not had a chance to discuss employment tenure and possible salary package,” Sime Darby chairman Tun Musa Hitam said at a press conference yesterday.

He then said it might be timely to take a fresh look at remuneration although the board is guided by market rates.

Asked if Bakke’s appointment was recommended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, he replied, “No, the Prime Minister does not recommend. The Nomination Committee within the Board recommended Datuk Bakke and I’m pleased to say he is eminently suitable for the job.”

Musa also declined to say who else was recommended for the job. Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, the head of Sime Darby Plantation Sdn Bhd, will continue to be acting chief executive of Sime Darby until Bakke assumes his new role.

Shares of Sime Darby rose one sen to close at RM7.81 yesterday.

Mercury Securities senior analyst Edmund Tham said he had expected the appointment to come from among existing leaders in other government-linked companies.

Palm Futures Rise as Rainy Season May Dampened Output June 19, 2010

PRICES on the crude palm oil futures contract market ended higher on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives yesterday as traders expected a rainy season to dampen productivity, dealers said.

At close, the July 2010 contract added RM13 to RM2,477 per tonne, August 2010 jumped RM15 to RM2,435 per tonne.

September 2010 rose RM18 to RM2,398 per tonne and October 2010 went up RM12 to RM2,384 per tonne.

Turnover was lower at 13,435 lots compared to 19,375 lots Wednesday while open interest rose to 76,819 contracts from 76,801 contracts previously.

On the physical market, June South added RM10 to RM2,510 per tonne.

Asian Crude Palm Oil Ends Up On Crude Oil, Weaker Ringgit June 6, 2010

Posted by admin in : General , add a comment

Crude palm oil futures on Malaysia’s derivatives exchange ended up Friday, rebounding from losses in the previous session as a recovery in crude oil and weakness in the ringgit prompted investors to cover short positions, trade participants said.

The benchmark August contract on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives ended MYR18 higher at MYR2,474 a metric ton after moving in a range of MYR2,455-MYR2,481/ton.

The dollar rose to MYR3.2720 from yesterday’s close of MYR3.2700, making CPO less expensive for palm oil refiners, who use the oil as feedstock.

“Crude’s rise above $75 a barrel and the rebound in soyoil gave palm prices a leg-up in the late trading session,” said a senior trading executive based in Singapore.

July soyoil on the Chicago Board of Trade was trading 5 points higher at 37.71 cents a pound at the end of trading on the BMD.

July crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose as much as 81 cents or 1.1% to $75.42 a barrel on Globex. At 0946 GMT, the July contract was up 54 cents at $75.15 a barrel.

Palm prices rose 1.6% this week, but many among traders said the trend wasn’t sustainable due to a likely rise in end-May palm oil inventory levels, as CPO output in Malaysia likely rose around 10% last month.

The rise in palm prices also narrowed the spread to prices of soyoil, resulting in a loss of market share as buyers stepped up purchases of the rival product, which is offered at par or slightly lower prices than palm oil at Brazilian and Argentinian ports, a trading executive at a Kuala Lumpur-based brokerage firm said.

Demand in the physical market “hasn’t been exciting and palm-soyoil’s narrow spread has prevented significant gains in CPO prices the past few months,” he said.

Cash palm olein used to be offered at a wide discount to soyoil of more than $100/ton, but now trades at par or at a slight premium.

Traders expect palm prices to move between MYR2,440 and MYR2,480/ton next week. A weak demand outlook and likely bearish production and inventory data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board will cap gains.

The government-run Malaysian Palm Oil Board will issue production, exports and month-end palm oil stocks data for May on June 10.

CME’s Group Inc.’s (CME) dollar-based CPO futures for September were trading $5.25 higher at $744.75/ton with 9 lots traded. One lot equals 25 tons.

August rupiah-denominated CPO futures on the Indonesia Commodity and Derivative Exchange ended 0.8% higher at IDR6,835 a kilogram with 84 lots traded. One lot is equivalent to 10 tons. The September contract ended 0.7% higher at IDR6,755/kg with 132 lots done.

In the cash market, palm olein for June shipment was offered unchanged at $805/ton. Cash CPO for prompt shipment also offered unchanged at MYR2,570/ton.

Open interest on the BMD was 69,501 lots, versus 69,525 lots Thursday. One lot is equivalent to 25 tons.

A total of 10,117 lots of CPO were traded versus 9,631 lots Thursday.

Malaysia’s foreign workers in oil palm sector to get another five years June 3, 2010

Foreign workers who have been employed in the oil palm plantation sector for five years will be allowed to have their permits renewed for another five years to overcome the issue of labour shortage, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the Go vernment was concerned over this problem.

“The Government is aware that if drastic early measures are not taken, it would jeopardise the productivity and competitiveness of this sub-sector,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Muhyiddin added that plantation was still one of the sectors in the country which was labour-intensive and the lack of participation among the locals had caused it to employ many foreign workers.

According to research conducted by a few agencies under the Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry last year, the number of foreigners working in the plantation sector was 520,449 people or 52% of its total workforce. — Bernama

Shortage Of Oil Palm Seedlings In Sarawak June 3, 2010

Sarawak, which is facing a shortage of oil palm seedlings, is expected to see rising demand as the state has yet to develop a quarter of its target of one million hectares of oil palm plantations, said State Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Naroden Majais.

He told an oil palm seedling entrepreneurship course here recently that Sarawak needed 16.4 million seedlings last year but the supply only amounted to 10 million.

Juara Beetuah Sdn Bhd managing director Michael James attributed the shortage in Sarawak, especially over the past two years, mainly to exports of oil palm seedlings to Kalimantan, Indonesia.

He said such sales had however abated as the Indonesian plantations, most of which were owned by Malaysian firms, had started their own nurseries.

Juara Beetuah, a major seedling producer and the only company in Sarawak awarded the competency certificate by Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), owns nurseries in Lundu (Kuching Division), Bintulu and Lawas in northern Sarawak.

James said his company produced up to 100,000 seedlings a year, which were mainly supplied to MPOB. The latter then distributes them to smallholders.

Juara Beetuah’s other customers are government agencies like Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority and Felda, which are involved in plantation projects.

“We produce based on advance contracts. On top of that, we produce another 10% for the market,” he told StarBiz.

Juara Beetuah uses high-yield clones that are able to produce between 28 and 33 tonnes of fresh fruit bunches per hectare a year.

However, James said the output would depend on several factors such as soil conditions and plantation management methods.

The company sells seedlings for RM8 to RM12 each, depending on transportation costs.
